Never apologise, never explain, Kate Fox told me, so let me start by apologising
for the following....
I just fancied talking about some of the songs, so here it is.

Ditch The Twists- Hopefully, If I've done my job properly, I shouldn't be
able to add anything to this. It's all there in the song. I thought it was
time to get things straight with people about how I feel. My best stuff
(Records, Blue Eyed Baby, The Drink, IKWYRT) has always been about feeling
extreme about something. Paul didn't actually want me to put out the end
bit. Anyway, it's just a bit of long-needed straight talking in a song.
In the Morning- A romantic song about a one night stand? OK! An
unashamed funk track? Yep! Serious words to a bouncy tune? Check! Lots of
fun, and Danny's best moment on the record is when he comes back in from the
breaks. Average White Band, we salute you. That's Jeans on the Wah-Wah
guitar, by the way. a 16 year old son of my mate said it made him want to wear
tie-dye
and smoke pot. Excellent.
Emptyhead- This was recorded in the last two days of the Album, and was
written in boskoops and at home, and finished in the studio. At this precise
moment I think it's the best piece of actual songwriting on there, but that
might be just because it's new. The two Acoustics are slightly out with each
other, and I love that. like sitting in a pub playing a song with a mate,
That's because I was learning how to play it as I recorded it. With some
encouragement from Jeansy I ended up with a canny little counter rhythm
thing going on in places. I need to learn the words and start playing this
live.
Stop Kidding Yourself- A list of lies. Big, stinking, awful lies that
comfort and harm in equal measure. Things I am glad about with this song
1- that I resisted trying to flower-up the lyrics.
2-That Trev Gibb played 12 string (best thing on the entire LP, as for as
I'm concerned)
3-Verity sang gently and beautifully, just like on her own CD
5- we managed to get just about everyone on the chorus harmonies without
making it sound like a Queen record.
Heirloom/Blue Eyed Baby- Kate Fox is a genius, no question. We worked
together at the beginning of this year and it was fantastic. When she
suggested this particular combination I was amazed and delighted. The first
time we did Blue Eyed Baby and Heirloom together we were both crying by the
end. Her poem is several light years ahead of anything I've heard in ages,
and almost breaks my heart when I hear it. This was actually recorded for
her book "Why I?", which came with a CD. I thought it really should go on
this here, even though I've done Blue Eyed Baby before, it's a very
different version. a lot more fragile. Done in one take, and half a tone
higher than normal to give it a slightly different feel. Between working
with Kate, Trev, Paul and Grimes, I think I've managed to get a bit of
confidence about my writing.
Happy New Year- This took me ages to write. It doesn't sound like it! 3
chords, two and a half verses and a chorus, but I was still changing words
as I was Recording it. I had the line "We sat and played some Lindisfarne,
some Dylan and Some blues" but decided to drop out the "Lindisfarne" bit. I
think I make it obvious enough where my influences come from! Paddy does a
lovely job on fiddle in this. I wanted it to sound like we were in someone's
living room on a really cold winter night in front of a fire. Hope it works.
